Project status date - 12-02-2011

Postby TheDushan » Fri Dec 02, 2011 11:23 pm

Hi.
I am currently interested in status of this project.
Can somebody please share little more information.

Is it dead or alive?
Is your IRC channel still alive?
What kind of difficulties you guys are experiencing at this moment?

Thanks
Dushan

TheDushan ... Openwolf?
I am glad you wrote. I follow the OpenWolf project progress on splashdamage forum.

Is it dead or alive?

The project is alive.
It 's always hard to carry out a project because there are always more difficulties than one thinks at first.
There is slow progress due to the loss of project leader, programmers, and the few contributions of some developers. We are trying to make corrective actions in order to give us a new organization and start over.
Currently I am the project leader and I'm trying to change the philosophy of the project.

- our first objective is to learn, share knowledge and have fun creating a game
- our second objective is to make the game

Is your IRC channel still alive?

No, it is not. Currently, ensure the dev teams presence is too much time expensive.
We are looking someone for team coordination and public relations on our IRC channel.

What kind of difficulties you guys are experiencing at this moment?

There are all the typical difficulties of projects made by unpaid volunteers for no commercial purpose.
The loss of the determination and motivation is easier if you're not paid.

I try to summarize as honestly as I can even it's not simple because there is much more to say:
- difficulty in managing resources and coordination
- lack of programmers
- the time spent on the project from someone of dev team seems to be very little
- the artistic part is few (maybe less of 10% of total) and sometimes the quality is not so high
- dev team members are significantly less than the initial phase

bye

Ye. That one from SplashDamage forum

OK I understand.

To be honest. I wanted to see is this project alive. If not I would like to port it to my engine.
Basically with OpenWolf I am now supporting ET, Tremulous 1.1.0 and GPP (GamePlay Preview) and would like to try same for Code43. I wanted to do to Q3 and Urban Terror same thing what I did to Tremulous.

With my approach, because of shared files (game assets - models, sounds, textures ...) it would be much easier to use it in separated games. [TremZ and ETXreaL team produced some really nice assets (under CC BY-NC 3.0)].
"TremZ" is just working name - I have changed "Enemy Territory" to that at this moment.

This is my moddb page with several photos.

EDIT: I have ported some stuff :)

You are a dead project hunter...! :)
Anyway the code and the artistic content of code43 was at an early stage so I think it is still too soon for make the port in Openwolf.
Take a look at this project seems very interesting even if inactive.

Most of our artist release under (under CC BY-NC-ND 3.0)
Maybe I'm wrong but i remember that unfortunately ETXreal is released under CC BY-SA
I remember that the fact that it could be used for commercial purposes has discouraged me to contribute.
However they are doing a good job although I think the cutting edge is make new maps that use the new features of the engine but also migrate from md3 to md5 in order to unlock 3D artists to make new models of weapons/players/animations (ETXreal-evolved?)

Great works!

NO. That is false information. ETXreaL team is only at this moment replacing stock ET textures with new one. MD5 models support in ETXreaL is also false. XreaL Renderer support it without questions, but it's missing game logic code for supporting it. Technically for ET projects, only my OpenWolf is supporting MD5 player models and weapons at this moment.

I checked the ETXreal home page on MODDB (maybe are old information).
Future Plan
* Add a Creative Commons BY-SA high resolution texture replacement pack including new material definitions to support diffuse, normal and specular textures

Probably I have not translated and well written. I know that ETXreal does not support md5. I meant that to make a really excellent work the Etxreal team must migrate from mdm / mdx to md5 and made weapons number/type/configuration not hard-coded.

Technically ET for projects, supporting MD5 is only my OpenWolf player models and weapons at this moment.

This is very interesting but I have not found information about it. Can you tell me something about it?
Do you changed the ET game code so Openwolf can handle player .md5 (from mdm/mdx to md5)?

bye
